Is Sharp Back Pain While Pregnant is Normal? Most of the pregnant women are suffering back pain during pregnancy period. Back pain in pregnancy is very common. During pregnancy, your body shows many changes.

A new life is growing inside of your body and you are going to accommodate your baby. Thus weigh gain occurs cause some discomfort on your back.

Back pain is stressful for the first time mothers. Comparing normal pains, sharp back pain while pregnant will be very uncomfortable. This needs your attention, but don’t be panic.

Possible Causes Of  Sharp Back Pain While Pregnant

  • Weight Gain

Weight gain is common in pregnancy. Women typically gain weights up to 35 pounds. The spine is supporting this weight. This may lead to ‘sharp back pain during pregnant’.

  • Posture Changes

Due to the posture changes, you may result in back pain. Pregnancy shifts your center of gravity, this will begin to adjust your posture and your way of the move.

  • Stress

  • Hormone changes

During the pregnancy time, your body makes a hormone called relaxin. This relaxin allows joints and ligaments in the pelvic area to become looser can cause back pain.

  • Muscle Separation

When uterus expands, the two parallel sheet of muscles in the abdomen may separate to the center seam. This separation leads to the worsen back pain.

Tips to avoid sharp back pain while pregnant

Some of these tips you can keep in mind to avoid discomfort and sharp back pain in your back while pregnant. 

  • Do not wear high-heeled shoes.
  • Do not sleep on your back.
  • Use your legs to squat than bend over to pick something up from the ground.
  • Wear support hose.
  • practice good posture
  • Include physical activity in your daily routine.

If you are experiencing “severe back pain in pregnancy” make sure to consult your doctor before taking pain medications. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is advisable during pregnancy and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Aspirin, Ibuprofen or naproxen are not advisable.

If your doctor recommends other pain medicines or muscle relaxants for some cases, that are safe during pregnancy. Always consult your doctor before taking any decision to have a medicine.

When to See your Doctor

Back pain is not a reason for urgent medical emergency or call the doctor.  But If you are experiencing severe back pain you should call your doctor right away.

In some cases, severe back pain leads to pregnancy-associated osteoporosis, septic arthritis or vertebral osteoarthritis. Rhythmic pains can be a sign of preterm labor. So if you are experiencing these problems or severe back pain, it’s important to see your doctor.
